Flu Shot Clinics

Influenza (commonly referred to as the flu) is a contagious respiratory illness caused by influenza viruses. Seasonal flu Infection can cause illness resulting in mild to severe symptoms with life-threatening complications. An estimated 5-20% of the U.S. population gets the flu each year, with an average of 200,000 hospitalizations and 36,000 deaths.*

H1N1 is more infectious than the seasonal flu.

Flu season in the U.S. is usually from November until April, with peak activity between late December and early March. Adults develop peak antibody protection about two weeks after vaccination with protection lasting approximately three months. Therefore, the optimal time to get vaccinated is usually during October and November.

Growing public awareness regarding the dangers of influenza has created a great demand for flu shots. Every fall, millions of people across the nation get vaccinated since it’s still believed to be the best way to stay protected from the flu. Heritage Health Concepts hosts hundreds of flu shot clinics each year to vaccinate people against influenza.

The FluMist (vaccine taken intranasally) is referred to as LAIV, for live attenuated influenza vaccine. The viruses in this vaccine are still alive and able to replicate, while the viruses in the “inactivated” flu shot are “dead” and unable to do so. Both vaccines contain the same virus strains, which are grown in eggs. Currently the LAIV is only approved for healthy people aged 5-49 years, while the flu shot is approved for most people older than 6 months.

The CDC recommends that you receive a flu shot if you meet one or more of the following criteria:

  • All persons who want to reduce the risk of becoming ill with influenza or of transmitting influenza to others
  • All children aged 6 months to 18 years old
  • All persons aged 50 years and older
  • Children and adolescents (aged 6 months to 18 years) receiving long-term aspirin therapy
  • Women who will be pregnant during the influenza season
  • Adults and children who have chronic pulmonary (including asthma), cardiovascular (except hypertension), renal, hepatic, hematological, or metabolic disorders (including diabetes mellitus)
  • Adults and children who are immunosuppressed
  • Residents of nursing homes and other chronic-care facilities
  • Healthcare personnel
  • Chealthy household contacts (including children) and caregivers of children aged less than 5 years and adults aged 50 years and older
  • Healthy household contacts (including children) and caregivers of persons with medical conditions that put them at higher risk for severe complications from influenza
