Influenza (commonly referred to as the flu) is a contagious respiratory illness caused by influenza viruses. Seasonal flu Infection can cause illness resulting in mild to severe symptoms with life-threatening complications. Approximately 20% of the U.S. population gets the flu each year, with an average of 200,000 hospitalizations and 36,000 deaths.
Growing public awareness regarding the dangers of influenza has created a great demand for flu shots. Every fall, millions of people across the nation get vaccinated since it’s still believed to be the best way to stay protected from the flu. Heritage Health Concepts hosts hundreds of flu shot clinics each year to vaccinate people against influenza. A group of at least twenty-five individuals qualifies for our on-site flu clinic service.
Flu season in the U.S. is usually from November until April, with peak activity between late December and early March. Adults develop peak antibody protection about two weeks after vaccination with protection lasting approximately three months. Those who choose to get vaccinated early in the flu season should consider getting a booster vaccination three months after their initial vaccination to ensure they are protected for the entire flu season.
Heritage Health Concepts proudly offers and recommends preservative free versions of our vaccines to all our clients. Preservative free formulas are just as effective as the traditional vaccine but can be safer for children, pregnant women, clients who may have sensitivities to regular vaccines, or individuals who simply wish to avoid additives in their vaccines.
The FluMist is referred to as LAIV, for live attenuated (weakened) influenza vaccine, and is taken intranasally (sprayed into the nostrils). Currently, HHC offers FluMist to healthy individuals aged 5-49 years, who are not pregnant, and do not have certain health conditions. LAIV does not contain thimerosal or other preservatives.
